Job Description
CCBRT is seeking a motivated and dedicated Librarian Volunteer to support its Academy Unit. This role is ideal for an individual with a strong interest in the medical and health-science field who is passionate about knowledge management and education.
The Librarian Volunteer will be responsible for establishing and managing a new library for a medical training college. This includes building the library from the ground up, organizing medical and academic resources, and supporting students and faculty in accessing high-quality learning materials. The role plays a critical part in creating an information-rich environment that supports teaching, learning, and research.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and implement the structure, layout, and classification system of a newly established medical library.
- Set up cataloging, circulation, and inventory management systems.
- Assist in selecting, acquiring, organizing, and maintaining medical textbooks, reference materials, journals, and digital resources.
- Develop and recommend library collections aligned with academic programs such as nursing, clinical medicine, and laboratory technology.
- Create and implement library policies, standard operating procedures, and collection development guidelines.
- Train staff, student assistants, and faculty representatives on basic library operations and best practices.
- Develop user guides and orientation materials to support library users.
- Provide mentorship and capacity-building support to ensure long-term sustainability of library services.
- Support administrative and research-related activities when required.
- Participate actively in team meetings, improvement initiatives, and problem-solving sessions.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Educational background in Library Science, Information Management, Education, or a related field.
- Familiarity with medical or health-science literature is an added advantage.
- Experience in cataloging, classification systems, and library management tools.
- Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Swahili.
- Computer literacy with the ability to manage digital resources.
- Ability to work independently, especially in a resource-limited or newly established environment.
