NEW JOB VACANCY AT BARRICK TANZANIA LIMITED

Job Title: Fatal Risk Control Verification Officer

Company: Barrick – North Mara Gold Mine Ltd

Location: Mara Region, Tarime District, Tanzania

1. Job Description

Barrick – North Mara Gold Mine Ltd is seeking highly committed and detail-oriented Fatal Risk Control Verification Officers to support safety assurance across multiple operational risk areas, including Process, Mining, Engineering, MRM/TSM, and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). The North Mara Mine, located approximately 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria, is one of Barrick’s key operations in East Africa and is dedicated to upholding world-class safety standards through strong fatal risk management systems.

In this crucial role, the Fatal Risk Control Verification Officer will work directly in the field, verifying whether critical controls for fatal risks are present, functional, effective, and consistently applied during real operational activities. Unlike traditional safety roles, this position does not own the risks but ensures the visibility of risk gaps, challenges weak or cosmetic controls, and provides reliable evidence that operational teams can use to prevent Material Unwanted Events (MUEs) and potential fatalities.

The role demands a high level of integrity, strong observational skills, a proactive mindset, and the confidence to escalate issues immediately when critical controls fail. Working under the supervision of the Fatal Risk Management Superintendent, the Verification Officer will spend most of their time on-site, engaging with operators, contractors, supervisors, and frontline teams to ensure fatal risk standards are not just documented — but lived every day.

This position offers the opportunity to influence operational safety culture, reinforce Barrick’s commitment to “controls before production,” and provide field insights that directly shape the site’s safety performance, reporting, audits, and continuous improvement strategy.

2. Duties and Responsibilities

A. Critical Control Field Verification

  • Conduct both scheduled and ad hoc verifications of critical controls related to fatal risks.
  • Assess controls based on performance criteria, not merely on presence or documentation.
  • Observe real work conditions and compare them against procedures, bowties, and risk documentation.
  • Identify any inconsistencies between expected controls and on-ground practices.
  • Engage field personnel to verify their understanding of controls and when they must be applied.

B. Evidence Collection and Quality Management

  • Collect high-quality, auditable evidence such as photos, readings, permits, interviews, and checklists.
  • Distinguish between formal compliance and genuine operational effectiveness.
  • Ensure verification records are accurate, complete, and compliant with documentation standards.
  • Upload all verification evidence in the approved systems for review by the Superintendent and regional teams.

C. Escalation of Non-Compliance

  • Immediately flag any critical control failure or fatal risk exposure.
  • Engage the supervisor and escalate serious risks to the Fatal Risk Management Superintendent.
  • Issue stop-work instructions when critical exposure is uncontrolled.
  • Monitor open actions and follow up with control owners until corrective actions are completed.

D. Auditing and Assurance Support

  • Provide evidence and field observations for Level 1 and Level 2 assurance activities.
  • Prepare evidence for Level 3 independent audits and guide auditors through field observations.
  • Share practical insights to strengthen control effectiveness assessments.

E. Coaching and Control Owner Support

  • Provide feedback to the Superintendent on competency gaps requiring training or organizational clarification.
  • Support frontline teams in understanding critical controls and fatal risk expectations.

F. Reporting and Governance

  • Enter verification data into approved digital tools consistently and accurately.
  • Prepare summaries of verification activities, failures, improvements, and trends.
  • Contribute content for dashboards, monthly reports, and quarterly governance documentation.

G. Continuous Improvement

  • Identify recurring risk patterns or weaknesses in critical controls.
  • Recommend improvements to checklists, sampling strategies, and verification methods.
  • Integrate learnings from incidents or near-misses into verification planning.

H. Culture Alignment

  • Demonstrate commitment to Barrick’s Fatal Risk Standards through consistent behaviour.
  • Promote a speak-up culture by encouraging workers to raise concerns about safety.
  • Act as a role model for safety-first decision-making.

3. Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • A trade qualification or relevant technical certification in mining, mineral processing, or a related field.
  • A degree in Engineering or a related discipline is an added advantage but not mandatory.

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years working experience at a mining site, preferably in developing countries.
  • Strong understanding of fatal risk controls and field verification techniques.
  • Ability to work in multicultural environments and remote mine sites.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to handle conflict constructively when addressing safety non-compliance.
  • Strong attention to detail, independent thinking, and field-focused work ethic.

4. What Barrick Offers

  • Competitive compensation package with bonuses and site-specific benefits.
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact on safety culture and performance.
  • Work in a dynamic, high-performing, and collaborative team environment.
  • Professional growth and exposure to global best practices in risk control.
  • Access to multiple career opportunities within the broader Barrick organization.
