Job Description

Barrick – North Mara Gold Mine LTD is seeking a highly experienced and results-driven Learning and Development Manager to lead and strengthen its training and capability-building function. Located in the Tarime district of the Mara region, North Mara Gold Mine is one of Tanzania’s most strategic mining operations, and this role forms a key part of supporting a high-performing, safety-driven workforce.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive training strategies aligned with operational goals, regulatory requirements, and Barrick’s global standards. This role requires a strong background in mining or heavy industrial environments, excellent leadership capabilities, and a commitment to Barrick’s core values—including integrity, accountability, sustainability, and zero harm.


Duties and Responsibilities

A. Training Strategy & Planning

  • Develop and execute an annual Training and Development Strategy aligned with mine operations.
  • Conduct detailed Training Needs Analysis (TNA) across departments.
  • Establish skills matrices and competency roadmaps for critical roles.
  • Support localization, succession planning, and capability-building initiatives.

B. Competency Management

  • Implement competency-based training frameworks (CBT/CBM).
  • Ensure staff competency in operational, safety, and leadership roles.
  • Oversee verification of competency (VOC) and maintain accurate records.
  • Ensure alignment with Barrick’s Learning and Development standards.

C. Safety, Regulatory & Compliance

  • Implement and track statutory training (OSHA, Mining Commission, etc.).
  • Coordinate site, departmental, and contractor inductions.
  • Manage refresher training for safety-critical roles.
  • Liaise with OSHA, VETA, NACTVET, and other regulatory bodies.

D. Learning Programs & Delivery

  • Design leadership, supervisory, and soft-skills programs.
  • Develop high-quality training materials (e-learning, blended, facilitator-led).
  • Manage external training providers and ensure training ROI.
  • Support apprenticeships, internships, graduate programs, and mentorships.

E. Training Administration & Systems

  • Manage the Learning Management System (LMS) and maintain accurate data.
  • Produce weekly, monthly, and quarterly training reports.
  • Oversee training audits and ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory standards.
  • Manage training budget and procurement processes.

F. People Leadership & Engagement

  • Lead, mentor, and guide the training team.
  • Collaborate with departmental leaders to prioritize training needs.
  • Promote a culture of learning across all workforce levels.
  • Engage in community-based talent development and CSR initiatives.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Training & Development, Education, HR, or related field.
  • Professional certification in L&D, CBT/CBM, or Training & Assessment is an advantage.
  • Valid manual driver’s license.

Experience & Competencies

  • 5–10 years’ experience in Learning & Development, with at least 5 years in mining or heavy industry.
  • Strong background in competency-based systems, LMS platforms, and digital learning tools.
  • Deep understanding of Tanzania’s regulatory training requirements.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team-building skills.
  • Experience in open-pit or underground mining preferred.
  • Excellent communication, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and strong compliance mindset.
