Job Description
Barrick – North Mara Gold Mine LTD is seeking a highly skilled and committed UG (Underground) Maintenance Manager to join its Africa Middle East Team. This leadership role is critical to ensuring effective maintenance operations, asset management, safety standards, and continuous improvement across the mine. The UG Maintenance Manager will oversee maintenance planning, engineering functions, workforce performance, and regulatory compliance to support the mine’s production targets and long-term sustainability.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned engineering professional with strong technical knowledge, proven management experience, and the ability to uphold Barrick’s core values—integrity, accountability, sustainability, safety, partnerships, transparency, and results-driven performance. This role requires hands-on leadership, strategic planning, and the capacity to manage people, systems, and mine infrastructure to world-class standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Safety, Health & Environmental Management
- Promote and maintain a safe working environment aligned with Tanzanian mining legislation and global mining standards.
- Ensure all employees understand their Duty of Care and comply with Safety & Health procedures.
- Confirm critical controls for all fatal-risk tasks and ensure all required work permits and hazard assessments (FLRA, WPI, JHA) are completed.
- Conduct regular inspections and ensure immediate correction of unsafe conditions.
- Lead safety interactions, toolbox meetings, incident reporting, and investigations.
2. Maintenance Planning, Asset Management & Execution
- Oversee daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance planning and ensure schedule compliance.
- Manage capital expenditure for asset management and long-term equipment reliability.
- Monitor critical equipment stoppages, investigate root causes, and implement solutions to prevent recurrence.
- Implement reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) and continuous improvement programs.
- Manage repairs and maintenance of mine surface buildings, facilities, utilities, residential areas, and sports facilities.
- Maintain accurate maintenance backlogs and resource allocation.
3. Operational Leadership & Team Management
- Build a skilled and high-performing maintenance workforce through training and mentorship.
- Deploy key initiatives, communicate operational priorities, and ensure performance accountability.
- Maintain strong contractor and vendor relationships, especially with local Tanzanian suppliers.
- Oversee procedural compliance, governance, and proper business conduct within the team.
4. Reporting, Budgeting & Governance
- Prepare annual maintenance budgets and manage cost control initiatives.
- Ensure timely and accurate daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance reports.
- Support corporate communication, community relations, and compliance with operational standards.
- Manage infrastructure expansion projects and ensure alignment with production needs.
Job Requirements
Education
- Tertiary Engineering Qualification (Essential).
- Mine Overseer’s Certificate of Competency or equivalent (Added Advantage).
- Mines Health & Safety Act awareness.
Experience & Competencies
- Minimum 5 years in a Maintenance Engineer role or higher within the mining industry.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience managing maintenance budgets.
- Minimum 2 years leading maintenance planning and scheduling functions.
- Strong leadership, safety commitment, analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
